First Year University 101

This is an exciting time in your life. You are experiencing more freedom, opportunity and responsibility than you have before. The first year attending a major college or university can be quite overwhelming - not to mention stressful. But taking a few simple steps can make your campus life much easier.

Remain Organised - This is easier said than done. But maintaining organisation over your class and study schedule is paramount to success. Set yourself a schdule for when you will study what coursework, and adhere to that schedule. Recent studies have shown that spending too much time on a particular subject can reduce one's focus, and that switching between subjects of concentration can increase our productivity.

Get Involved - Most universities offer hundreds, sometimes thousands of ways to participate in the university experience. These include student groups, study groups, greek life, athletics and intramurals and others. Getting involved in an extracurricular activity not only bolsters your resume - it gives you a way to release stress and meet new people.

Eat and Sleep - All too often, today's students are pushed to the limit. It is important that you maintain a proper schedule of nutrition and rest. When your body is functioning at its best, so is your mind.

Ask for help - Students forget that they are the customer. When you are stumped in a class, or need help with an assignment or report, dont be afraid to reach out and ask for help. When a professor is not available, often times there are graduate students tasked with providing assistance to undergrads. Seek the advice of your advisor when you are unsure of which classes to take, and checkout the various online resources available on your university's website or intranet.

Have fun - These will be some of the best years of your life. Relax, enjoy yourself, and make the most of the time you are there.
