Boston University

Boston University was established in 1839. It is a private research institution situated in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. It is one of the leading private universities in US and has over 4000 faculty membership and over 31000 students. The university is not affiliated to any sect but has some historical affiliation with Methodist church. Back in 1839, Newbury Biblical Institute was established by some Methodist preachers. The institute was relocated to Concord in 1847. It remained in Concord for 20 years and in 1867 the institute relocated to Massachusetts from where it was chartered as Boston Theological Institute.

Two years later the institute received a university charter which allowed it to operate as Boston University. The new university adopted a non discriminatory approach in student admission. This implied that all departments were open to all regardless of gender or racial background. Boston University has well established campuses. The main campus houses most lecture and school buildings. There is a number of playing grounds and athletic facilities in its west campus. Due to continued expansion the main campus contains several buildings that are architecturally built. The buildings belonging to the school of theology and the college of arts and sciences are probably the most recognizable units. These buildings were erected in gothic style in 1940s. A quite large amount of the main campus is occupied by the famous Boston brownstone. This stretches all the way to the south campus. The buildings in this region are mainly hostels but also serve as institute and department offices.

In the period between 1960 and 1980, the Warren towers, Mugar library law school were put up. More buildings have been put up recently. These include a science and engineering center, the student village and the management school buildings. The university has campuses in Brussels, Dubai, London, Los Angeles, Washington, DC and Sydney, Boston University offers on-campus accommodation to all undergraduate students undertaking a four year course. At the moment about 76% of all undergraduate students live on campus.

The university offers several programs. These include bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees program as well as dental and medical degrees. These programs are offered through the 18 schools and well established colleges available. Boston University contains the following colleges: college of Fine Arts; Arts and Sciences, Communication, Engineering, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. School of Law, Management, Social Work, Theology, Medicine, Public Health, Goldman School of Dental Medicine and an academy do exist. Boston University is academically enriched with a number of academic publications and journals. Six nationally well known law journals are produced and hosted by the school of law. The school of education is a home to the oldest educational journal in US. Apart from these periodic journals, other publications are also done and edited by different professors. Boston University also offers special academic program. These programs entail the core curriculum program which provides great books to freshmen. Offered in the Arts and Sciences College, the program provides a combination of math, science, arts, humanities and social sciences to form an insightful thought in the students mind concerning this world.
