We've all dreamed of having that socially maturing and eye-opening overseas experience. The perspective one gains by traveling outside their country/continent of birth is undeniable. But with the current economic recession and the growing costs of domestic and international travel, leisurely travel overseas is becoming less attainable for the average American.
Just as business travel takes individuals to places they might not otherwise have visited, the pursuit of education can perform a similar role. Here we briefly look at some advantages to studying abroad; albeit for one semester or for the entirety of your higher education.
1) Costs - The American higher education system was for several decades the envy of the modernized world. American universities were responsible for the world's greatest minds. Students from all over the world dreamed of attending a modern American university. Parents of foreign students spent fortunes to send their children to America to study in hopes of a brighter future. But the universities of other countries have quickly caught up, and many surpassed their American counterparts. Many foreign countries are hoping to attract American students and offer great discounts on tuition for foreign born students.
2) Perspective - As the economy moves ever closer to one of global inter-connectivity, the demand for individuals with cross cultural and cross linguistic perspective will rise. There is no better way to learn a new language or to study another culture than through total immersion. Place yourself amongst your subject of study and you will quickly master it.
3) Timing - Let's face it. You are young, energetic, and have less responsibility now than you will in the future. Now is the perfect time if ever there was one to journey away from home, away from friends and family, and experience something new and exciting. What better way to do it then to combine this experience with your formal education?
According to many studies (which I will allow you to go find yourself) student who study abroad for part or all of their education show higher grades, lower stress levels and are more attractive to employers. Do the research, look into your options and see if studying abroad makes sense for you.
