There are many different types of scholarships and they come in all sizes. Most scholarships were started by a donor or founder, usually a wealthy individual, couple or a corporation. Our job at AAHE.ORG is to help match you to the one that fits your needs.
Often, a student can be granted more than one scholarship.Let's first discuss the various scholarships that one could apply for. Here are some common classifications:
Merit Scholarships are awarded based on the academic, athletic or artistic abilities of the student. Normally a student that excels in one of these areas will be granted a scholarship directly by the college they wish to attend, or one they are willing to attend. There are, however, some private organizations that will grand merit based scholarships.
Student Aid is a form of a scholarship. A student can complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to try and get federal funds. That FAFSA uses a formula to calculate the student's and family's need for the funds.
Minority scholarships or Student Specific scholarships are granted by race, gender, religion, handicaps and a variety of other factors that are specific to the student.
Job Scholarships or Career Scholarships are awarded based on the career the student wishes to enter. High need areas such as nurses have the easiest time getting them. The scholarships are awarded by the colleges and universities but the funds generally come from corporate donors.
