Miami Dade College

Miami Dade College is a state college with eight campuses and twenty one outreach centers which are found all over Miami Dade County, Florida USA. Miami Dade College started as Dade county college in 1960 and was located in Miami Central High School. The college registered students who could not afford other colleges and were mainly African American and Cuban exiles. The college, therefore, become the first integrated junior college in Florida. Since its inception in 1960, the college experienced tremendous growth ranging from changing its name to Miami Dade junior college to opening new campuses. The college eventually outgrew the more famous university of Florida and Florida state university with more than 23,341 students enrolled in 1967.

In mid-70s the college implemented an open admissions policy which made the college to strengthen the standards of their education. In 1977, a medical center was built to train allied health and nursing programs and became fully fledged division in 1979. The new world school of Art which trains performing and visual artists was established in 1984. However, in the mid-1990s the college was hard hit after the Florida legislature reduced the educational budget, forcing the college to rely more on the Miami Dade college foundation. In 2002, The Honors College was created, whose main purpose was to offer honors programs to the gifted and talented high school graduates.

The biggest achievements in the history of Miami Dade College come in 2003 when it was granted the right to award baccalaureate degrees in education. Currently, the college is offering three bachelors degrees and has changed its name from Miami Dade community college to Miami Dade College.

Miami Dade College has a very strong academic reputation as an institution of higher learning with highly experienced professors and notable scholars in the united state. Currently, the institution has more than 300 academic programs, with Some of this programs leading to associate degrees. Some of the associate degrees include arts, science and applied sciences.
